"In this context, the status of psychoanalysis as a science of human experience is discussed, approached on the ‘first person’ basis of a phenomenological understanding of subjective experience. In such approaches, phenomena like incorporation, phantasy, emotion and the unconscious are discussed afresh. These topics, important for modern phenomenology as well as for psychoanalysis, are examined in the context of the constitution of the human person as well as of our intersubjective world. The analyses are also interdisciplinary, making use of connections with modern medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy. The systematic investigations are enriched by historical analysis and research in the internal development of the disciplines involved. "

"Psikologi pada awalnya merupakan sebuah ilmu yang menekankan pada kesadaran manusia. Namun, muncul pemikiran baru dari Sigmund Freud, yang tidak hanya memberi kontribusi dalam bidang psikologi berupa metode yang menekankan unconsciousness atau alam bawah sadar manusia dalam meneliti perilaku manusia namun juga memberi kontribusi dalam pendekatan penelitian kesusastraan, yaitu pendekatan psikoanalisis. Pendekatan psikoanalisis ini dapat diterapkan dalam meneliti literatur-literatur, salah satunya adalah novel Choke karya Chuck Palahniuk. Dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalisis mengenai Oedipus complex, skripsi ini menunjukkan abnormalitas hubungan tokoh Victor Mancini dengan ibunya dan gejala-gejala atau symptoms yang timbul akibat usaha Victor untuk bernegosiasi dengan fase Oedipal. Analisis tersebut membuktikan bahwa perilaku-perilaku neurosis yang dilakukan Victor merupakan upaya pencapaian kebahagiaan atas terpenuhinya hasrat-hasrat yang ia miliki terhadap ibunya dan mencapai solusi atas Oedipus complex yang dideritanya.

Psychology was at first a branch of science that focused on human's consciousness. However, there was a new perspective from Sigmund Freud, which was not only giving contribution to psychology about a new idea of unconsciousness influence to examining human mind but also a contribution in literature analysis approach, which is Psychoanalysis approach. This approach can be implemented to analyze literature works, novel Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, for example.

By using Psychoanalysis theory about Oedipus complex, this undergraduate thesis shows an abnormality in Victor Mancini and his mother's relationship and the symptoms that arise because of his effort to negotiate with the Oedipal phase. The analysis proves that his neurotic behavior is his effort to achieve pleasure of satisfying his desires towards his mother and to get a solution of his Oedipus complex."
