"In order to understand the way English is used and seen in Indonesia today, it is useful to know something about how historical, political, socio-cultural and linguistic factors have shaped its status and functions over the last century. The use of English in Indonesia has developed in the context of post-colonial educational competency building, and more recently the need to support development ? in particular its role in state education. However, attitudes of some policy makers and commentators towards the language have often been ambivalent, expressing fears of its power to exert negative cultural influences. The special status of English as a global language with many potential varieties that might pose as models for Indonesia also poses the question of which one would be right for the country. The paper looks at these educational and policy issues, and also gives some suggestions about the future. "

"Pertimbangan memilih buku ajar tidak hanya ada pada aspek linguistik, tetapi juga aspek visual yang diharapkan dapat memantik minat pemelajar muda, terutama untuk menarik minat pemelajar muda. Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan makna multimodal gambar visual dan fungsi tutur teks verbal dalam buku teks EFL yang terkenal, yaitu Super Minds Student’s book 3. Penelitian ini menginvestigasi interaksi antara pembaca dan gambar panel pada buku teks yang dibangun melalui gambar visual dan tulisan penyertanya. Penelitian ini mengadopsi kerangka tata bahasa visual (Kress & van Leeweun, 2020) yang berfokus pada bagaimana makna dibuat melalui elemen interaksional dan kerangka analisis fungsi tutur (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014) untuk mengetahui bagaimana teks verbal membentuk interaksi melalui fungsi tutur dalam Super MindsStudent’s book 3. Data yang diperoleh dari gambar visual sebanyak 80 gambar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan beberapa temuan. Pertama, gambar cenderung memposisikan pembaca sebagai pengamat. Gambar-gambar ini berfungsi untuk merinci karakter dan karakteristik peserta dalam gambar sehingga pembaca perlu memperhatikan pesan dalam cerita. Kedua, teks verbal yang dianalisis dari 325 ujaran mengungkapkan bahwa pernyataan lebih mendominasi percakapan dalam cerita daripada perintah dan pertanyaan. Artinya, partisipan dalam cerita tersebut bermaksud menyampaikan informasi. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa analisis interaksional dan fungsi tutur menunjukkan bahwa moda visual dan verbal saling terkait dan berperan penting dalam membangun interaksi dengan pembaca. Oleh karena itu, guru di kelas EFL yang menggunakan buku Super Minds harus menyertakan pertimbangan multimodal dalam pengajaran bahasa yang memperhatikan bahasa dan gambar yang disajikan dalam buku teks.
The consideration of using textbooks should not only include linguistic aspects, but visual aspects as well, particularly to attract young student’s motivation. This research is to do with multimodal meanings of visual and verbal text relation in a well-known EFL textbook, Super Minds Student’s book 3. This study investigates the interaction between readers and panel images in the textbook constructed through visual images and their accompanying texts. This study employs a multimodal framework of visual grammar (Kress & van Leeweun, 2020), which focuses on the construction of interactional elements in images, and speech function (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), to examine how verbal texts shape interactions in a popular textbook. Data were obtained from the chosen book drawing on the total of 80 images. The results of the study indicate several findings. First, the images tend to position the reader as an observer. These images serve to detail the characters and the characteristics of the participants in the image so the readers need to pay attention to the message in the story. Secondly, the verbal texts analysed from 325 speeches acknowledged that statements dominate the conversation in the story more than commands and questions. This means that participants in the story intend to deliver information. It can be concluded that interactional analysis and speech function show that visual and verbal modes are interrelated and play an important role in building interactions with readers. Teachers in EFL classes using Super Minds books should thus include a multimodal consideration of teaching the language which pay attention to both language and images presented in the textbook."
