"The papers published in this special issue of the Asia-Pacific Population Journal were presented at the international conference ?Population and Development in Asia: Critical Issues for a Sustainable Future?, held from 20 to 22 March 2006 in Phuket, Thailand. The panel on ?Ageing and Development? was one of the 10 panels.
This book examines the future surge in Asian families. Because of older adults in these societies will have higher levels of education and standards of living, there are some concerns that traditional support for elderly may fade. Therefore, promoting active ageing may be one important means to reduce the dependence of older persons on the younger population.
Rapid population ageing in Asia is accompanied by rapid changes in socio-economic and political developments. This will in turn affect living arrangements of older persons while family has traditionally been the pillar of support for this segment of the population in Asia, some studies have shown that modernization and urbanization tend to affect the level and quality o f this familial support."

"This book presents how to set up a resilient pay-as-you-go pension system, whether the current balance between expenses and revenues in social expenditure is viable in the future, and, if not, what changes need to be introduced, whether the relative well-being of the current and future cohorts of the old will be preserved, and how their standards of living compare to those experienced by the old in the recent past."

As Indonesia has been moving toward an ageing society, efforts have been made to create an Active Ageing society, where the elderly are and remain healthy, independent, and productive. This study is examining the elderly?s financial condition, one of the most important requirements to achieve an Active Ageing society. It uses four measurements of the financial condition: whether or not the elderly works, the number of working hours, the income of the elderly, and whether or not the elderly is poor. The study uses a logit regression analysis for examining the determinants of working or not, and whether the elderly is poor. It uses an OLS analysis for finding the determinants of number of hours working and income. All statistical analyses employ individual, household and spatial variables. Some of the findings are that individual and household variables (age, sex, place of residence, relationship to head of household, marital status, living arrangement, education, literacy, health complaints, Raskin, and health insurance) significantly influence decision to work, the number of working hours, incomes, and whether being poor or not. Hospitalization has a significant effect on work and income only. Business credit and social security only significantly influence decision to work, the number of working hours and incomes. Spatial variables (measure with GDP, the minimum wage, percent of poor people) significantly influence decision to work, the number of working hours, income, and whether poor or not.

"The volume includes chapters on most of the countries in Southeast Asia, it could be said to some extent that this book represents a "bible" of gender and ageing in the region. The volume will be of value especially to policy-makers from the countries in the region since research is important to help governments put in place relevant policies to meet the needs of the elderly and to prepare themselves to cope with the increasing dependency ratio of the older persons on the working age population as well as pressures on the public pension system."
