"This book explores the role of gender in influencing war-fighting actors' strategies towards the attack or protection of civilians. Traditional narratives suggest that killing civilians intentionally in wars happens infrequently, and that the perpetration of civilian targeting is limited to aberrant actors. Recently, scholars have shown that both state and non-state actors target civilians, even while explicitly deferring to the civilian immunity principle. This book fills a gap in the accounts of how civilian targeting happens, and shows that these actors are in large part targeting women rather than some gender-neutral understanding of civilians. It presents a history of civilian victimization in wars and conflicts, and then lays out a feminist theoretical approach to understanding civilian victimization. It explores the British Blockade of Germany in World War I, the Soviet 'Rape of Berlin' in World War II, the Rwandan genocide, and the contemporary conflict in northeast Nigeria. Across these case studies, the authors lay out how gender is key to how war-fighting actors understand both themselves and their opponents, and therefore plays a role in shaping strategic and tactical choices. It makes the argument that seeing women in nationalist and war narratives is crucial to understanding when and how civilians come to be targeted in wars, and how that targeting can be reduced. "The Second World War was a defining event in modern world history. Indias manpower and financial resources enabled the British Empire in particular and the Allies in general to win against the Axis powers. The Indian troops fought from Hong Kong in the east up to Italy in the west. The present monograph, based on archival data, attempts to highlight the complex interrelationship between Indian armed forces, society, and World War II. This monograph is a corrective to the cultural studies approach of totally neglecting blood and gore. But what is aimed here is not merely a traditional narrative of military history. Rather than merely providing a chronological account of military operations, an attempt has been made to integrate military history with the social and cultural contexts. Tools, ideas, and institutions of violence are fused with the host social fabric and the cultural context. The book is divided into two parts. The first four chapters of the book study the impact of manpower and economic mobilization and internal security on the Indian society, while the last three chapters of the volume deal with the Indian armed forces in combat. The aim is to show the interrelationship between training, technology, and tactics in the battlefields. Wherever possible, soldiers views of combat and the home front are given. Hence, the monograph is a blend of both history from the top and history from below."

"Terjadinya perubahan besar dalam struktur keamanan dunia dalam era pasca Perang Dingin, menjadikan situasi keamanan Asia Pasifik dilanda ketidakpastian, Sedikitnya terdapat dua alasan yang menyebabkan situasi keamanan tersebut, yaitu pertama terjadinya pengurangan kehadiran kekuatan militer Amerika Serikat di kawasan tersebut yang menimbulkan kekhawatiran diantara di kawasan. Kekhawatiran tersebut mengakibatkan munculnya peningkatan pembangunan militer dan dilema keamanan. Alasan kedua adalah negara-negara Asia Pasifik pasca Perang Dingin tidak memiliki persepsi yang sama mengenai ancaman terhadap keamanan di kawasan.Tesis ini membahas faktor-faktor penghambat dan pendukung bagi terbentuknya kerja sama keamanan di kawasan Asia Pasifik. Penulis membagi faktor-faktor tersebut ke dalam dua bagian, yaitu faktor-faktor penghambat terbentuknya kerja sama keamanan di kawasan Asia Pasifik antara lain seperti persepsi dan sikap negara-negara besar di kawasan, timbulnya dilema keamanan akibat peningkatan kemampuan militer dan perkembangan sistem internasional pasca Perang Dingin. Sedangkan pada bagian kedua membahas mengenai faktor-faktor pendukung kerja sama keamanan di kawasan Asia Pasifik seperti adanya interdependensi, peran konstruktif ASEAN dalam menangani masalah keamanan regional. Namun untuk membatasi meluasnya ruang lingkup penelitian, perrmbahasan dibatasi seputar wilayah Asia Timur dan Asia Tenggara.Dalam hal ini penulis mencoba membahasnya dengan menggunakan pendekatan rezim internasional dan dilema keamanan yang dikemukakan oleh Oran Young, Robert O. Keohane, Bilveer Singh dan DR. Amien Rais. Adapun dalam menganalisanya, penulis melakukan studi kepustakaan yang didasarkan pada buku-buku dan referensi lainnya sebagai sumber data yang ada kaitannya dengan pokok masalah penelitian. Pembahasan yang didukung dengan data yang ada mendukung hipotesa yang diambil oleh penulis bahwa situasi keamanan di kawasan Asia Pasifik pasca Perang Dingin masih tergantung pada interaksi antar negara-negara besar dengan negara-negara lainnya di kawasan, dan semakin tingginya faktor-faktor penghambat yang ada maka semakin rendah kemungkinan atau semakin tinggi kesulitan pembentukan kerja sama keamanan di Asia Pasifik pasca Perang Dingin serta peran konstruktif ASEAN dalam merealisasikan pembentukan forum dialog multilateral di kawasan Asia Pasifik, namun untuk membatasi jangkauan pembahasan dalam masalah tersebut tidak dibahas masalah ARF dan prospeknya secara detail."
