"Tesis ini mengangkat kampanye akal sehat sebagai salah satu wacana yang berkembang dalam Pemilu 2019. Retorika sebagai seni memengaruhi digunakan sebagai metode dalam mengkampanyekan akal sehat. Dalam tesis ini, retorika yang dikonseptualisasikan tidak hanya memuat retorika tradisonal Aristoteles, tetapi juga retorika dalam dunia pasca-kebenaran. Locus analisis tesis ini menggunakan retorika yang disampaikan Gerung dalam Diskusi Publik yang diselenggarakan Lintas Komunikasi Alumni Jerman (Linkom Aljer) pada Jumat 08 Februari 2019 di Kalibata, Jakarta Selatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkritisi makna akal sehat dalam retorika Gerung dan membongkar orientasi politik yang menggerakkan komunikator. Metode Analisis Wacana Kritis digunakan untuk mendekati objek penelitian pada tiga level berbeda: level teks, level praktik diskursif, dan level sosio-kultural. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa akal sehat dalam retorika Gerung pertama-tama bermakna sebagai kapasitas dalam menilai realitas. Penilaian atas realitas yang mengabaikan data dan fakta sebagai rekan episteme menjadikan kampanye akal sehat tersebut jatuh pada kecenderungan retorika pasca-kebenaran. Selain itu, tesis ini menunjukkan bahwa orientasi di balik retorika Gerung bercorak personal dan politis-strategis sekaligus.<

This thesis discusses about the campaign of common sense as a part of the developing discourses in Indonesian Election 2019. Rhetoric as an art of persuade is used as a method in campaigning common sense. The rhetoric concepted inside this thesis consist three main elements of communicator as contained in Aristotles rhetoric. There are ethos (ethic and credibility), pathos (emotional attachment), and logos (logic). In addition, common sense discourse is placed in the context of rhetoric in the post-truth world. Locus of analysis in this thesis is the rhetoric delivered by Gerung in a public discussion organized by Linkom Aljer on January 08, 2019. We use Norman Faircloughs Critical Discourse Analysis to uncover the meaning of common sense in Gerungs rhetoric and the orientation that drives communicators in discourse of common sense. For this reason, we use a three-dimensional analysis of the Fairclough model in approaching Gerungs rhetoric. The results of this study indicate that first of all, common sense in Gerungs rhetoric means as a capacity in assessing the reality. The assessment of reality that ignores data and facts makes the common sense campaign fall to the tendency of post-truth rhetoric. In addition, this thesis shows that the orientation behind Gerungs rhetoric is both personal and political-strategic at the same time."

"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan aspek yang mendasari tindakan memendam emosi pada orang Asia Amerika dalam seri Beef (2023). Penelitian ini melihat bahwa seri tersebut mendatangkan perspektif baru dalam mengamati emosi orang Asia Amerika serta keterkaitannya dengan konteks sosial. Dua karakter utama dalam seri tersebut tinggal di tengah hierarki sosial yang kuat. Oleh karena itu, emosi yang merupakan bagian penting individu ditekan oleh ketidakseimbangan agensi dalam struktur sosial yang ada. Dengan demikian, pola tindakan memendam emosi pada dua karakter tersebut tidak hanya dapat dilihat secara gamblang, tetapi juga dalam interaksi sehari-hari yang dijalani mereka sebagai orang Asia Amerika. Berangkat dari latar belakang tersebut, analisis wacana dan pragmatik berfungsi untuk memperlihatkan hubungan antara emosi individu serta identitas mereka sebagai orang yang hidup dalam masyarakat luas. Analisis pada penelitian ini mengambil sejumlah adegan yang menunjukkan representasi paling kuat terhadap emosi yang dipendam. Dengan mengacu pada teori tindak tutur dari Austin dan Searle serta maksim dari prinsip kerja sama Grice, penelitian ini menemukan banyak penerapan tindakan yang berlawanan dengan maksim oleh dua karakter utama. Tindakan tersebut ditujukan untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan ucapan orang lain, menyembunyikan bagian diri yang tidak baik, dan meyakinkan kemampuan diri terhadap orang di sekitar mereka. Sementara itu, temuan penelitian juga menunjukkan tindakan yang berlawanan dengan maksim pada orang-orang di sekeliling dua karakter utama untuk mengalihkan pembicaraan berdasarkan alasan dan tujuan tertentu. Penelitian ini kemudian merangkum bahwa tindakan yang berlawanan dengan maksim pada dua karakter utama menjadi sebuah pola tindakan memendam emosi, yang sekaligus menjadi sejenis strategi mereka untuk tampil mampu beradaptasi di tengah masyarakat Amerika.

This paper is aimed to discover underlying aspects behind the suppressed emotions of the Asian Americans in the series Beef (2023) by using the combination of discourse and pragmatics analysis. This paper finds that the series offers a fresh lens in paying attention to emotions of the Asian Americans and its relations to social context. As the two main characters live in a society where racial hierarchy strongly exists, emotions that should be recognized are suppressed by such existing imbalance of agency in the social structure. Then, patterns of suppression of emotions not only could be seen in an obvious way, but also in the everyday interactions experienced by them as Asian American individuals. Discourse and pragmatics analysis then disclose the relations between suppressed individual emotions and their identity living in a wide society. Several scenes which depict the most representations of suppressed emotions are taken for analysis. Referring to Austin and Searle’s speech acts as well as Grice’s cooperative principles, this study specifically finds many applications of acts against maxims by the two characters to conform with others’ utterances, to hide a part of themselves that are not favorable, and to assure their surrounding of their capability. Meanwhile, acts against maxims are found in the characters around them to divert their conversations based on certain motives. This study then concludes acts against maxims shown by the two main characters suggest a pattern of suppressed emotions and simultaneously their strategy to appear capable of fitting in the American society."
