"This book searches for answers to these questions in the nature of the city, particularly in the social interactions that take place in urban space distinctively guided by different land uses and people?s activities. In other words, the book deals with the urban fabric of crime and fear. The novelty of the book is to place safety and security issues on the urban scale by (1) showing links between urban structure, and crime and fear, (2) illustrating how different disciplines deal with urban vulnerability to (and fear of) crime (3) including concrete examples of issues and challenges found in European and North American cities, and, without being too extensive, also in cities of the Global South."

"From Los Angeles to Tokyo, Urban Sociolinguistics is a sociolinguistic study of twelve urban settings around the world. Building on William Labov’s famous New York Study, the authors demonstrate how language use in these areas is changing based on belief systems, behavioural norms, day-to-day rituals and linguistic practices.
All chapters are written by key figures in sociolinguistics and presents the personal stories of individuals using linguistic means to go about their daily communications, in diverse sociolinguistic systems such as:
extremely large urban conurbations like Cairo, Tokyo, and Mexico City
smaller settings like Paris and Sydney
less urbanised places such as the Western Netherlands Randstad area and Kohima in India.
Providing new perspectives on crucial themes such as language choice and language contact, code-switching and mixing, language and identity, language policy and planning and social networks, this is key reading for students and researchers in the areas of multilingualism and super-diversity within sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and urban studies."

This undergraduate thesis aims to explore the phenomenon of sound bubbles in constructing the experience of sound in noisy urban spaces. A sound bubble is a personalized conceptual sound space constructed by sound through the separation/individuation of the sense of hearing, creating a micro, flexible and invisible envelope. The envelope created has two mechanisms, masking desired sounds (inward mechanism) and blocking (outward mechanism) unwanted sounds to produce an experience of inwardness. Presenting the experience of inwardness is one form of the sound bubble's role in editing an individual's urban experience. The sustainability of the experience of inwardness is determined by the development of technology. Through this thesis, the urban experience with sound bubble is traced through the author's subjective experimentation through one route using three different instruments and mapping the sound bubble experience through creative representation. This exploration shows that the formation of sound bubbles is closely related to the instrument technology used, especially in the quality of blocking and masking. The formation comes through various sound bubble characters in constructing the sound experience, especially in presenting inwardness in urban spaces."
