"Skripsi ini membahas tentang terciptanya gerakan perlawanan terhadap penyumbatan arus informasi, yakni dengan menerbitkan pers alternatif yang lahir sebagai dampak langsung dari pembredelan pers 1994 di bawah rezim Orde Baru. Adapun, terbitan pers alternatif yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah Suara Independen dan Xpos yang dikelola oleh Aliansi Jurnalis Independen. Substansi isi Suara Independen dan Xpos menjadikan pemerintah Orde Baru sebagai sasaran kritik utama mereka dengan mencoba mengangkat isu-isu sensitif melalui penyajian yang berbeda dengan terbitan pers arus utama. Dan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keberanian terbitan pers alternatif untuk membuka indikasi sesuatu yang buruk bagi upaya perwujudan good governance ini turut memiliki peran bersama-sama gerakan reformasi lainnya dalam melemahkan legitimasi pemerintah Orde Baru di tahun 1998.

This thesis discusses the creation of the resistance movement against the blockage of information flow, there is the alternative press publishing which born as a direct result of the banning press in 1994 under the New Order regime. Meanwhile, the objects of alternative press publications in this study are Suara Independen and Xpos that managed by the Alliance of Independent Journalists. The substance and contect of the Suara Independen and Xpos focus on New Order regime as their main target of criticism by trying to blow up the sensitive issues with their own way through the presentation of different from the other mainstream news publications. The results showed that the alternative press publications’ courage to open an indication of something that is bad for the realization of good governance basically claiming that they have their own role along with the other reform movements on undermining the legitimacy of the New Order regime in 1998."

"Artikel ini membahas mengenai peran Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) dalam memperjuangkan idealisme wartawan Indonesia pada tahun 1994-1999. Pembahasan dimulai dengan kondisi dinamika pers pada masa Orde Baru, proses terbentuknya AJI sebagai organisasi alternatif wartawan, respon pemerintah terhadap kelahiran AJI, langkah-langkah AJI dalam mewujudkan idealisme wartawan, dan perannya dalam memperjuangkan idealisme wartawan pada rentang 1994-1999. Penelitian sebelumnya yang membahas tentang AJI lebih membahas tentang surat kabar terbitan AJI dan sepak terjang AJI cabang. Pembahasan mengenai sumbangsih AJI dalam mewujudkan idealisme wartawan dan terwujudnya Undang-undang pers nomor 40 tahun 1999 belum dibahas pada penelitian sebelumnya. Selama masa Orde Baru pers mengalami pengekangan dan rawan terjadi pembredelan. AJI hadir sebagai wadah alternatif organisasi wartawan yang saat itu dikendalikan oleh pemerintah, yakni Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI). Penulisan artikel ini menggunakan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari tahapan Heuristik, Verifikasi, Intepretasi, Historiografi. Pada tahap heuristik peneliti mengambil sumber berupa wawancara tokoh AJI yang memiliki peran penting pada era 1994-1999, koran sezaman, buku, dan jurnal. Hasil dari penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa AJI mengemban peran yaitu menolak kooptasi dan intimidasi negara, menolak politik perizinan untuk pers, dan menegakkan prinsip jurnalisme. AJI berhasil mewadahi proses perjuangan idealisme para wartawan Indonesia untuk mencapai kebebasan pers dimana prosesnya ditandai dengan disahkannya Undang-undang nomor 40 tahun 1999.

This article discusses about the role of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in fighting for the idealism of Indonesian journalist in 1994-1999. This paper present the ups and down conditions in the New Order Era, the process of the establishment AJI as an alternative organization for journalist, the government's response through the incipience of AJI, AJI's ways to actualize journalist’s idealism, and their role in fought for journalist’s idealism at 1994-1999. Previous research about AJI  only  discussed  newspapers published by AJI and the actions of AJI subsidiory. The discussion regrading the contribution of AJI in realizing  journalistic ideals and the realization of the press law number 40 of 1999 has’nt been discussed in previous research. During the New Order era, the press was restrained and proned to be banned. AJI was present as an alternative forum for the journalist organization that controlled by the government, namely the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI). This article use the historical method which consists of the stages of Heuristics, Verification, Interpretation, Historiography. At the heuristic stage, the researcher takes the source by obtained sources through interviews with AJI figures who had an important role in the 1994-1999 era, contemporary newspapers, books, and journals. The results prove that AJI had a role to refused the co-optation and state intimidation, declined political press license, also sustained the principles of journalism. AJI was succeeded to accommode the idealism of journalists with all their struggles to fought for freedom of the press, the journalist’s prosperity, and the escalation of journalist’s professionalism."
