"The Indonesian massacres of 1965-1966 claimed the lives of an estimated half a million men, women and children. Histories of this period of mass violence in Indonesia’s past have focused almost exclusively on top-level political and military actors, their roles in the violence, and their movements and mobilization of perpetrators. Based on extensive interviews with women survivors of the massacres and detention camps, this book provides the first in-depth analysis of sexualised forms of violence perpetrated against women and girl victims during this period. It looks at the stories of individual women caught up in the massacres and mass arrests, focusing on their testimonies and their experiences of violence and survival. The book aims not only to redress the lack of scholarly attention but also to provide significant new analysis on the gendered and gendering effects of sexual violence against women and girls in situations of genocidal violence."

This article discusses Violence against Women after the September 30th Movement in Java (1965-1979). The discussion begins with the role of the Indonesian Army and civilian groups in the arrests, women who experienced arrests and violence, and the impact of violence experienced by these women. Previous studies that discussed violence against women in the 1965 tragedy emphasized patriarchal culture as the main factor in violence against women after the 1965 G30S. Discussions on other factors and violence experienced by women who were not involved in PKI-affiliated organizations have not been discussed in previous studies. This article uses a historical method consisting of heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography steps. In the heuristic stage, the researcher used oral interviews with several former political prisoners of '65 and women whose family members had been arrested, contemporary newspapers, books, journals, and magazines. The results of this study revealed that women who experienced detention and violence were caused by the course of the Kopkamtib clean-up action that was not in accordance with legal procedures, information contained in the TNI-AD media, and the low critical culture in receiving information by the Indonesian people. The violence experienced by the women who were detained was very diverse, ranging from verbal, physical, to sexual violence. This violence resulted in various losses, both physically and psychologically."
