"Interest in globalization began in the middle of the 1980s. It is only recently, however, that globalization has taken on a very prominent role. A buzzword since the 1990s globalization has become, according to Roland Robertson, "an intellectual play zone, a site for the expression of residual social theoretical interests, interpretative indulgence or the display of world ideological preferences" (1998:49)."

"ABSTRACT
The paper advances the reason for an inclusive review of what constitutes African culture in view of the impact of globalization on the continent of Africa. Culture is a significant aspect of the African social system. It is the platform for asserting Africanity. The paper is motivated by George Herbert Meads theory of symbolic interactionism whose core concern is mutual inclusivity. African culture has undergone different stages of modification. What constituted African culture in the 19th century, for example, is not what constitutes it in the present day. The paper, therefore, argues the need for African culture to embrace and coexist with the Western contact which globalization has occasioned. Such inclusivity is capable of making the continent of Africa affirm its Africanness and as such, its relevance on the global stage. A historical periodization of the cultures evolution is undertaken, resulting in the emergence of such categories as primitive African culture, traditional African culture and contemporary African culture. Also, the paper laments the inherent contradiction in the presentday African cultural practices whereby Africans live by Western values in their realities but condemn the West according to the principle of nationalism. Following this, it is proposed that African culture should liberalize and permit the indispensable visiting Western worldview to coexist with it. African spiritualism, arts and ethics are identified as the most enduring of all the elements of African culture, needed for Africas technology, iconic identity, and rectitude, respectively."

"Beneath the present 'globalization of inequality' lies the current repitition on a planetary scale of the emancipation of business interests from all extant socio-cultural institutions of ethically inspired supervision and control and, consequently, the immunization of profit. The state is today less and less able, and willing to promise its subjects existential security. On the fears that saturate the present-day society, politicians as much as the consumer markets are eager to capitalize. The disastrous side-effects and 'collateral damages' of global laissez faire, cannot be effectively dealt with separately from the rest of the planet in one corner of the globe. 'Social state' is no longer viable, only a 'social planet' may take over the functions that the social states tried, with varying success, to perform. There are valid reasons to suppose that on a globalized planet on which the plight of everyone everywhere determines the plight of all the others while being determined by them, one can no longer assure and effectively protect democracy 'separately' - in isolation, in one country, or in a few selected countries only. The fare of freedom and democracy in each land is decided and settled on the global stage; and only onn that stage it can be defended with a realistic chance of a lasting success. "
