"Peningkatan popularitas Partai Demokrat Swedia yang ditandai dengan lonjakan suara yang mereka peroleh dalam 3 pemilihan umum terakhir (2010, 2014, 2018), telah menciptakan riak perubahan dalam lanskap politik di Swedia. Melalui penelitian ini, penulis hendak mengeksplorasi bagaimana kondisi modal sosial di Swedia dapat menjelaskan peningkatan popularitas Partai Demokrat Swedia. Berangkat dari argumen Robert Putnam yang menyatakan bahwa, “Tingkat modal sosial dalam suatu struktur masyarakat berbanding lurus dengan tingkat absorpsi demokrasi dan tingkat toleransi masyarakat tersebut”, penulis berusaha membedah bentuk keterkaitan antara kondisi modal sosial dengan pertumbuhan gerakan populis ekstrem kanan melalui analisa kasus yang terjadi di Swedia. Penulis menganalisa keadaan terkini modal sosial di Swedia melalui dua indikator yang digunakan oleh Putnam dalam mengukur tingkat modal sosial (tingkat kepercayaan dan tingkat keanggotaan asosiasi masyarakat). Dari data-data yang didapatkan oleh penulis, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa adanya tren penurunan modal sosial di Swedia (yang utamanya digambarkan oleh menurunnya tingkat kepercayaan publik secara general terhadap otoritas pemerintah) memiliki korelasi yang kuat dalam menjelaskan peningkatan popularitas Partai Demokrat Swedia. Kesimpulan ini diperkuat dengan adanya data dari Legatum Prosperity Index (yang juga menggunakan indikator Putnam) yang menunjukkan bahwa penurunan indeks modal sosial di Swedia yang terjadi pada periode 2016-2018 bertepatan dengan momentum terjadinya peningkatan popularitas Partai Demokrat Swedia secara drastis pada periode yang sama (2016-2018). The increase in popularity of the Sweden Democrats, marked by the surge in votes they received in the last 3 general elections (2010, 2014, 2018), has created ripples of change in the political landscape in Sweden. Through this research, the writer intends to explore how the conditions of social capital in Sweden can explain the increasing popularity of the Sweden Democrats. Departing from Robert Putnam's argument which states that, "The level of social capital in a community structure is positively correlated to the level of democracy absorption and the level of tolerance of the community", the author tries to dissect the form of the relationship between the conditions of social capital and the growth of the extreme right populist movement through analysis of cases that occur. in Sweden. The author analyzes the current state of social capital in Sweden through two indicators used by Putnam in measuring the level of social capital (level of trust and level of associational membership). From the data obtained by the author, the author conclude that the downward trend in social capital in Sweden (which is mainly illustrated by the decrease in the general level of public trust in government authority) has a strong correlation in explaining the increasing popularity of the Sweden Democrats. This conclusion is reinforced by the data from the Legatum Prosperity Index (which also uses the Putnam indicator) which shows that the decline in the social capital index in Sweden that occurred in the 2016-2018 period coincided with the momentum of a drastic increase in the popularity of the Sweden Democrats in the same period (2016-2018).
