"ABSTRAKTesis ini membahas representasi Freemasonry, strategi representasi dan pengaruhnya terhadap representasi ibu kota Washington, D.C. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori representasi dan semiotik Peirce.Tesis ini menunjukkan bahwa The Lost Symbol merepresentasikan Freemasonry melalui simbol dan ritual Mason, arsitektur kota, monumen, bangunan dan lanskap Washington, D.C. Dengan strategi oposisi biner, dialektika dan negasi afirmasi, Freemasonry direpresentasikan sebagai persaudaraan dengan rahasia, beriman pada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, terbuka, toleran dan pluralis. Representasi Freemasonry berpengaruh terhadap representasi ibu kota Washington, D.C. sebagai kota kenangan (memorial city) dan kota sakral. Di samping itu, tesis ini juga menunjukkan posisi The Lost Symbol sebagai representasi tandingan dan respons atas gagasan konspirasi dalam konteks Amerika.

Abstract

The thesis examines the representation of Freemasonry in Dan Brown?s The Lost Symbol. The thesis looks at the problems: how the Freemasonry represented in the novel, what strategy used in representing Freemasonry and how it influences the representation of the capital city Washington, D.C. This novel is analyzed carefully and accurately using the theory of representation and Peirce?s semiotics.

The thesis argues that The Lost Symbol represents Freemasonry through Masonic symbols and rituals, city architectures, monuments, buildings, and landscapes in Washington DC. The representation of Freemasonry as fraternal organization poses the secret, faithful, open-minded, tolerant, and pluralist modes. The analysis uses binary opposition, dialectics and negation-affirmation technique to show that representation of Freemasonry influenced the representation of Washington, D.C. as memorial and sacred capital city. Besides, the thesis argues that The Lost Symbol positioned as counter-representation and response toward the idea of conspiracy in American context."

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses the history Vrijmetselarij or better known as Freemasonry in

Indonesia. Especially Vrijmetselarij relationship with the indigenous elites in Java

since 1908, when the emergence of the first modern organization, Budi Utomo,

until the dissolution of Vrijmetselarij in Indonesia in 1962. Vrijmetselarij

attention to education, including education for the natives, presumably be one

factor in the emergence of modern Indonesian elite that the majority of the

characters of Western educational backgrounds. The majority of the indigenous

elite who joined Vrijmetselarij also have a good educational background. When

membership Vrijmetselarij of indigenous elites had reached a steady state after

Indonesia's independence, the Indonesian Supreme Lodge founded an

independent, though its age is not long."

"Gerakan lingkungan antisawit adalah gerakan yang baru dalam gerakan lingkungan, walaupun isu sawit bukanlah isu yang baru namun tidak pernah sebelumnya menjadi pembahasan yang lebih berorientasi pada lingkungan. Secara empiris gerakan sosial ini menunjukkan bahwa diperlukan pendekatan yang lebih terintegrasi untuk menggambarkan gerakan sosial di Indonesia.

Anti Oil Palm Environment Movement is a variant to a new social movement in the enviroment movement. Eventhough oil palm issue wasn`t a new issue but it wasn`t considered as environmental problem. This research studied Sawit Watch as a network which mobilize new social movement. The study used New Social Movement Theory and Mobilization approachs to reflect the social movement dynamic and organization through its discontinuty and continuity factor. Empiric study reflected that an integrated approach needed from New Social Movement Theory and Mobilization Resources Theory to present social movement in Indonesia."
