Public art is a form of art that is placed on public space, associated with general public and concerned with response from the public in its assessment. Openness of public spaces give the possibility of multiple responses because it can be accessed by everybody. Public art with site in the form of public space contribute to elements of public space. On public space ,the users performs passive and active engagements. Passive and active engagement generate social activities. As an element of public space, public art has part in the response in the form of passive and active engagements of public space users. However, there are public art which didn't generate a response from the users of public space despite its strategic position. This minithesis covers how public art as residing in a place could affect activities of the public space. Approach used by the writer are literature study and case studies through observational methods. From the literature study, writer obtained the triangulation theory to determine how the stimulus generated by the public art as an object supports the occurrence of social activities. The case study was done by comparison to the four public space that is Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, Bundaran Bank Indonesia, Suropati Park, and the Statue of Pangeran Diponegoro. The four places have different results. In general, public art can be a stimulus of social activities and may cause triangulation, but one location only generate passive involvement. In overall location, supporting elements needed to support public art along with other activities in public spaces. Placement of public art should be an integral part of public space in which it's placed for public art with a site in the form of public space also serves as a stimulus and an element of public space that can stimulate triangulation. In conclusion, The role of public art in public spaces is not just decoration, or markers, but has a role in the continuity of social activity in public spaces."
