Qiu, Zaozao
"Zaozao Qiu shows in this thesis that transition metals can mediate or catalyze the cycloaddition or coupling reactions of carboryne with alkynes or alkenes to afford benzocarboranes, alkenylcarboranes or dihydrobenzocarboranes. These results represent powerful strategies to assemble useful complex molecules from very simple precursors in a single operation. Carboranes have many applications in medicine. However, their unique structures make derivatization difficult and the limited efficient synthetic methods to obtain functional carborane materials have restricted applications of carboranes within a narrow scope. This work breaks a new ground in metal-carboryne chemistry and will have a significant impact on synthetic, cluster and materials chemistry."

ABSTRACTThe mechanism of metal-insulator transition (MIT) in vanadium dioksida (VO2) is still under debate whether it is due to the structural phase transition (Peierls dis-tortion) or electron correlation. A previous study indicating that MIT appears far below the critical temperature of TC ≈ 340 K when a small amount of oxygen is taken out the system suggested that oxygen screening and electronic correlations play a dominant role in MIT of VO2. To demonstrate this mechanism, we con-struct a Hamiltonian with a kinetic part constructed within the tight-binding scheme and an interaction part treated within the mean-field a p proximation for the system without and with oxygen vacancies, and then calculate the density of states for both systems using green function technique. Our results successfully demonstrate the role of oxygens in MIT of VO2 within Mott-Hubbard picture where ferromagnetic ground states are necessary for the scenario to work.
