"Medicinal natural products : a biosynthetic approach, third edition, provides a comprehensive and balanced introduction to natural products from a biosynthetic perspective, focussing on the metabolic sequences leading to various classes of natural products. The book builds upon fundamental chemical principles and guides the reader through a wealth of diverse natural metabolites with particular emphasis on those used in medicine.
There have been rapid advances in biosynthetic understanding over the past decade through enzymology, gene isolation and genetic engineering. Medicinal Natural Products has been extended and fully updated in this new edition to reflect and explain these developments and other advances in the field."

Research on biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using plant extracts is growing rapidly because eco-friendly and cost-effective. One species of the genus Diospyros that has known potential for AgNP biosynthesis is Diospyros celebica Bakh. (ebony). This study was conducted to explore AgNP biosynthesis using boiled water extract from ebony leaves with variation in biosynthetic parameter, which is volume ratio of extract and AgNO3. This study aim: (1) to obtain AgNP from biosynthesis using boiled water extract of ebony leaves; (2) to analyze the UV-Vis spectrum from biosynthetic solutions with various volume ratios of extracts and AgNO3 (5.0:1; 2.0:1; 0.5:1; 0.2:1; 0.1:1) during reaction time (25 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 24 hours); and (3) to determine phytochemical compounds contained in boiled water extract of ebony leaves. Silver nanoparticles was observed by discoloration of the solution and UV-Vis spectrum. Phytochemical qualitative test and UV-Vis spectrum of extract was performed to predict compounds that act as reductant. The results showed that the mixture colour changed from light yellow to grayish brown, which indicates formation of silver nanoparticles. The presence of silver nanoparticles in solution was confirmed by absorbance peaks at 350-700 nm. UV-Vis spectrum analysis showed the fastest formation rate of AgNP, and the highest number of AgNP was at ratio 0.2:1. However, the best stability of AgNP were showed at ratio 0.5:1. The shapes of AgNP in ratio of 0.5:1; 0.2:1; and 0.1:1 varies, which are rod, sphere, oval, and plate, based on the deconvolution analysis. Boiled water extract of ebony leaves contained phenolic compound, flavonoid, saponin, alkaloid, and chlorophyll derivates, which may play an important role in the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles."
