ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to 1) explain and 2) elaborate the Zen-Buddhism values within
the widely renowned Japanese Martial Arts, Karate. The writer wishes to specifically explore
the numerous mu-Shin Zen Buddhism values which many believe is engraved within the
Kata. In order to present a solid and trustworthy essay, the writer has assumed a literate
research method and furthermore has explored various sources and references such as mu-
shin scriptures and martial art books. As such, the writer has successfully consolidated
supporting theories with substantial facts to solidify and strengthen her assertions, therefore
creating a strong foundation within the essay. Having conducted thorough research on both
mu-shin Zen-Buddhism and the kata, the writer has come to a conclusion that mu-shin Zen
Buddhism is a unique state of mind which a karate practitioner might achieve through
constant practice of the kata. The mu-shin state is often reflected in a karate practitioner?s
kata. A kata that is performed by one who has achieved the Mu-Shin state is said to be
perfect in terms of form, power out-put and flow of movement.;The purpose of this paper is to 1) explain and 2) elaborate the Zen-Buddhism values within
